Acne is a skin condition that results in the formation of different types of bumps on the skin such as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, or cysts. Acne mainly affects the face but can also affect other parts of the body like the shoulders, neck, back, and buttocks.

Acne, medically known as Acne Vulgaris, is commonly prevalent among teenagers because of the hormonal changes during puberty which result in excessive oil secretion in the skin. Increased oil secretion can cause the pores of the skin to get blocked. This results in dirt, debris, inflammatory cells, and bacteria building up under the skin, which finally leads to the onset of acne. Though most common in teenagers, acne can affect anyone of any age.

Tips for combating Teen Acne

1. Since the oil build up on the skin is the major factor that contributes to development of acne, it is imperative to cleanse your skin at least twice daily with a gentle exfoliating cleanser.

2. Do not scrub your skin if you are suffering from acne. It can only make it worse and also leave scars on your skin.

3. Another common mistake that teenagers make is popping or picking at the blemishes. This should be absolutely avoided because it will only make the acne worse and cause severe scarring.

4. Foods with high glycemic index like white rice, white bread, pasta, and sweetened beverages can aggravate acne; hence the consumption of these foods must be restricted.

5. Fried, greasy, and processed foods should be avoided since what you take into your body will show through your skin.

6. Dairy products can stimulate oil glands in your skin to secrete excessive oil so it is best to restrict your intake. Avoid stimulants like alcohol, cigarettes, tea, and coffee because they can also stimulate your oil glands to produce excessive oil.

8. Using over-the-counter topical lotions and ointments containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can be useful in controlling acne. But make you are not allergic to these ingredients before using any acne medications.

Acne is a common skin disorder among teenagers which can surely be controlled by maintaining good personal hygiene, cleansing your skin twice daily, using oil-free moisturizers and cosmetics, and by following a healthy diet and lifestyle. If you feel your acne is uncontrollable, it is best to consult your dermatologist immediately to start finding the right medical solution for you.
