Perhaps one of the most common skin problems that anyone can encounter is acne. It may appear as a couple pimples on one’s face but regardless of the amount of pimples one gets, acne affects a person’s self-esteem. It’s important to not become depressed over your pimples but to realize that everyone goes through it at some point in their lives. Acne is most commonly associated with puberty among teenagers and hormones becoming imbalanced. Sometimes, the problem goes away quickly but other times it can be a nuisance for a few years.
If your acne lasts for more than a few months, a visit to the dermatologist may be needed so he or she can prescribe prescription strength medication to treat the acne. Whether you choose the medical route or natural route, it’s important to first understand why acne occurs.
Acne is a common skin problem that results from excess sebum (oil) being secreted from the sebaceous glands into the pores of the skin. This process of oil seeping into the pores is needed to help keep skin hydrated and lubricated but it does become a problem when excess oil is being produced. When excess oil is secreted it clogs the pores of skin. Acne-causing bacteria and dead skin cells also clog the pores and between the 3 of these factors, pressure builds in the pore walls, ultimately rupturing the pores and causing pimples to form. The most widespread areas for acne to form are on the face, chest, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and back.
It’s important to pay attention to two things that can help fight acne and prevent future acne from occurring if followed properly – A solid skincare routine and a healthy diet.
Every person needs to follow a good skincare routine that includes cleansing, exfoliating, toning, and moisturizing. Cleansing, toning, and moisturizing should be done 2 times a day, morning and night, while gentle exfoliating should be done at least 3 times a week to remove dead skin cells that clog excess oil and acne-causing bacteria in the pores. Many don’t moisturize because they’re afraid of getting more oily or breaking out but that is simply not true. Moisturizing with an oil-free moisturizer will balance the pH levels of your skin, minimizing oil from surfacing on the skin, thus reducing acne.
Following a healthy diet that includes organic fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains will heal your body from within and show through your skin. Have you ever heard of the expression, “You are what you eat?” It’s true! If you eat lots of junk food that is processed and filled with fat and sugar, of course it will affect your body negatively. So it’s important to eat well to look and feel great. Drinking 8 glasses of water a day is also essential to releasing toxins from the body that could affect the skin if not released quickly enough.
Lastly, there are acne home treatments you can use to eradicate your skin problem. You can make use of oatmeal, honey and other common herbal ingredients to not only get rid of your acne but to also rejuvenate your skin.
