Is Titanium Dioxide Safe to Use on the Skin?

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide is found in many products we use on a daily basis including our food, paint products, even in cosmetics. It is also found in many sunscreens. This chemical is one of the top 50 chemicals produced worldwide yet many don’t even think twice to check if it’s safe to come in contact with on a daily basis. Titanium dioxide is a naturally made mineral found in two forms, rutile and anatase. Titanium is pure within these forms but has impurities around it so it needs to be chemically processed to remove all impurities leaving it odorless and able to absorb other elements. The question is, is it carcinogenic?

There has been much debate on this topic and have proven to be non-carcinogenic in some forms but still is not the healthiest chemical to ingest or be around in high quantities. Some think that when used in sunscreen, titanium dioxide can irritate the skin and cause more skin problems than being beneficial. Others completely disregard these claims. Regardless, titanium dioxide protects the skin from UVA and UVB radiation and has proven quite effective in doing so.

For cosmetic purposes, titanium dioxide is used after it has been micronized and coated for cosmetic use. It helps in allowing makeup to be spread more easily across the skin and contributes in making it feel better and less heavy in general. Some studies claim that it does not go deeper than the top layers of skin so it is apparently safe to use daily but some have had adverse reactions to titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide can clog the pores of some people’s skin and can also cause inflammation if you are suffering with acne or sensitive skin. It is recommended to test a small patch of skin before applying a beauty product that may have titanium dioxide in it, just to be safe and make sure you don’t have an irritated reaction from the product.

All in all, studies have shown that titanium dioxide is safe for daily use on the skin but it’s important to not inhale or ingest the makeup you are applying! Many mineral powders contain titanium dioxide and should not be breathed in. Hold your breath as you apply a loose powder and know that it can irritate some people’s skin so again, test an area of skin first before applying a new cosmetic product all over your face. It’s important to be proactive about your health and research all ingredients in your cosmetics and skincare before applying,  and of course use as many all-natural products as possible.
