The mixture of dry and oily skin is known as combination skin. On some days, you may feel like you’re battling both, and other days you feel super dry or super oily! What gives?! Unfortunately, many factors can determine if you will or do suffer from combination skin from heredity, age, environment including weather (cold one day, hot the next), water levels in the air (moisture and humidity), and lifestyle.
Though you may have oily or dry skin anywhere on the face, the most common area to be affected is the T-Zone area. This is typically the most oily area on the face so it’s important to properly moisturize this area with an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer to balance out the moisture on the skin, which minimizes oils from forming and clogging up your pores. Toners and astringents are great to use on oily areas but in moderation and should not include any alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, oils from citrus, or fragrance, natural of synthetic . Over-usage can make your skin too dry, in turn pulling more bad oils to the surface to hydrate that area, making you even more dry! For evening out the skin and complexion, use a gentle exfoliating scrub two to three times a week but not more than this because it can irritate the overly dry patches on your skin.
Helpful hints:
1. Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser suited for combination skin morning and night. If you feel that you are super greasy halfway through the day, allow yourself one extra facial cleansing (again as needed). Over-cleansing can irritate your skin, causing breakouts or added dryness or oiliness.
2. Follow with an oil-free moisturizer to balance out skin hydration, morning and night.
3. Use cosmetics and skincare that are oil-free and paraben-free. These types of products will be less irritating to your skin, working better with the pH levels to keep skin and moisture balanced.
4. Carry a small tube of your face moisturizer in case you have dry patches that need added moisture during the day. If you’re wearing makeup, apply a small amount to clean hands, and gently pat onto the dry patch, allowing the skin to absorb the moisturizer and doing this should not ruin your foundation or makeup. Just don’t rub it in…otherwise it will ruin your makeup!
5. Also carry oil-blotting sheets or oil-blotting powder with you for touch-ups to oily skin during the day.
6. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep skin fresh and hydrated.
