It’s horrific hearing about how long some of you keep your makeup, years sometimes, and continue to use it! Old makeup is a breeding ground for bacteria and germs and can cause you severe acne. Check out these tips to minimize breakouts by staying up-to-date with your makeup stash!
1. When applying foundation, throw out your disposable triangle sponge after each use! Don’t re-use for even one extra day! If you are cost-conscious, invest in a great foundation brush which you can sweep clean of old makeup after each use with a little makeup brush cleaner and Kleenex, or rubbing alcohol and Kleenex!
2. If you used pressed powder with a sponge that is included in the case, replace after a month. Flat round sponges are inexpensive and can easily replace the disposed of sponge. Otherwise, use a kabuki brush to apply powder to your skin and clean after each use with makeup brush cleaner or rubbing alcohol and Kleenex.
3. As stated above, clean ALL your makeup brushes after each use with a little makeup brush cleaner or rubbing alcohol and Kleenex for instant disinfection. Every couple weeks, cleanse your makeup brushes with warm water and a gentle shampoo. Reshape brush heads and lay flat on towel or Kleenex to dry. Allow 6-8 hours to dry fully.
4. Dispose of blushes and powder compacts after 6 months. Any longer will be bad for your skin (oils, germs, bacteria). Eye shadows and eye liners should be disposed after a year or if you have an eye infection throw makeup away immediately and start over!
5. Try to use oil-free and paraben-free makeup. These types of products are more gentle on the skin and are less likely to clog your pores, especially if you wear your makeup for at least 8 hours a day. The shelf life is not as long with paraben-free makeup and usually has an expiration date, but that is a good thing!!!
Makeup is not like your favorite pair of sweatpants…you can’t keep it forever! And just because you have plenty left to use, it doesn’t mean you should. Follow the tips above and get rid of your products and replace with new, fresh, clean makeup accordingly. And hey, it gives you a reason to go on a shopping spree! Clean makeup equals happy and clean skin!
