Toothpaste-Does it Really Work?

For sure everyone has heard at one time or another that applying toothpaste to pimples can kill them within a couple of days. It’s also known to be cost-effective…but is it the safest route? Probably not. Read further to learn the pros and cons of toothpaste as a pimple spot treatment.

It has been said that the ingredient, calcium carbonate, is known to dry out and kill pimples when you apply a small amount of toothpaste directly on the pimples. The glycerin has been thought to soothe irritated skin. While these are both true facts, and toothpaste may initially rid you of minor pimples, it does not destroy “the source” of where your acne is stemming from. Doctors believe that a safer route to take is purchasing an over-the-counter topical treatment that has 2.5% or higher of benzoyl peroxide or 1% or higher of salicylic acid. Both ingredients are known to destroy acne from the source under your skin and are thought to be less irritating the majority of people. Test out a small area of your skin if trying a new product to make sure you don’t have an adverse reaction to the treatment.

Be careful with toothpaste as an acne treatment because it can actually irritate your skin more, especially if you have sensitive skin. Menthol is an ingredient in toothpaste and can cause added redness and irritation. Just as advised above, if you are going to try toothpaste as a spot treatment, test out an area of the skin before putting in multiple areas. We suggest you use a simple type of toothpaste if you are going this route. The paste is less chance to be irritating on your skin compared to a gel toothpaste and definitely avoid using toothpaste on your skin that has bleach whitening ingredients for your teeth…OUCH!
