Numerous studies have shown the connection between acne and stress. When one is stressing out due to stressful circumstances, pimples appear quickly on the skin.
The Connection Between Acne and Stress
When you are in a stressful situation, your body releases certain hormones to help you cope with the stress. One of these hormones is androgen released by your adrenal glands.
But while these hormones help you cope with stress, androgens also over-stimulate the sebaceous glands that emit oil in your skin. In turn, this causes an overproduction of oil. With excessive amounts of oil on your skin, there’s a greater chance of your pores becoming clogged and pimples developing.
So if you are experiencing stress-related acne, it’s best that you fight the root cause of your acne and find ways to de-stress.
Here are some ways to de-stress:
Eat foods rich in Vitamin B2. Vitamin B2 is a well-known vitamin that helps your body relax and fight stress. Foods rich in B2 include green leafy vegetables, fish, and eggs.
Exercise regularly. Regular exercise helps alleviate the effects of stress. When you work out, your body releases endorphins, which helps improve your mood. With a positive mood, you will notice a significant drop in your stress levels. Plus, exercising will improve your self-esteem by getting you physically fit.
Escape from stress. Whether it is a boring routine or work-related stress, you deserve the chance to get away from these stresses of life from time to time. All you need is to take a little getaway or take a break from your routine. Once you return, you will feel refreshed, recharged, and ultimately, stress-free. Without stress, you won’t have to worry about pimples breaking out once again.
Seek help. You cannot carry the weight of the world on your shoulders—and you don’t have to. If you are feeling particularly stressed at home or at work, talking to somebody you trust always works. Whether you just need somebody to listen to you, or someone who can give you great advice, being able to have someone to tell your problems to will be a great way to deal with stress.
Stress can be a major contributor to acne breakouts. The good thing though, is that you can manage it and deal with it. How well you deal with stress is an effective acne treatment for stress-related acne problems. And just breathe…
