Back acne, commonly known as bacne, is acne that commonly forms on the upper back, neck, upper arms, and /or the buttocks. This form of acne can be quite uncomfortable and painful, as well as embarrassing. The acne can be in the form of blackheads or white heads, pimples, or cysts. It’s very important to note that you do not want to pick at or pop these pimples because doing so will just cause the acne to spread to a larger area of the body. You are also not alone in dealing with this. Many people get bacne at some time in their lives and it will eventually go away as long as you take proper steps to treat it.
Bacne usually first occurs during the teenage years when the sebaceous glands begin to function and can cause an extreme amount of sebum to be produced. With this excess of sebum, pores and hair follicles become clogged, causing oils and bacteria to form which then leads to breakouts and acne. Adults can also get bacne and typically is caused by excessive sweating, stress, or eating fatty and greasy/oily foods. It’s important to wear clean attire when working out and to shower and change out dirty workout attire as quickly as possible. Those with long hair should pull hair back when working out or when sweating excessively. Shampoos and conditioners can also clog pores so it’s best to cleanse your body with soap after washing and conditioning your hair, to remove any build-up from hair products.
Here are some more tips on how to heal back acne:
1. Use a gentle cleanser on other areas of breakouts, as you would use on your face. Using a gentle loofah will also help remove dead skin which can also trap dirt and oils.
2. Try a topical treatment prescribed from your dermatologist or over-the-counter. Gels and creams that include benzoyl peroxide or clindamycin are best at killing the bacteria that causes acne.
3. Resist the urge to pick or pop at your pimples.
4. Wear your hair pulled back when working out or sweating excessively.
5. Change out of workout clothes or dirty or sweaty clothes as quickly as possible to prevent bacteria and oils from clogging your pores. Shower as well.
6. Avoid using a body wash with fragrance because fragrance is known to irritate the skin, especially if you’re already breaking out.
