Skin Cancer and How to Protect Yourself

Spring break is just around the corner which means warm and sunny vacations for a lot of you! And summer is following shortly behind which means lots of fun in the sun and enjoying that warm weather! It’s VERY important to wear sunscreen and moisturizer with SPF protection during these coming months…though if we had it our way here at Acne Skin Site we’d require everyone to wear SPF protection all year long!

Not to ruin your fun but some facts to consider:

Melanoma (skin cancer) kills one person every hour.

-Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults, ages 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for young people, ages 15-29 years old.

-In the past 31 years, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined.

-Indoor ultraviolet (UV) tanners are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma than those who have never tanned indoors.

AVOID TANNING BEDS AT ALL COSTS! IT’S NOT WORTH IT!

These are just a handful of statistics from www.skincancer.org on the severity of skin cancer. Many people take skin cancer lightly and don’t think it will affect them, but unfortunately this is not the case. Skin cancer is the most preventable form of cancer yet many of us commonly overlook using SPF regularly and avoiding tanning beds.

What is SPF? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and the higher the number of SPF sunscreen, the better the protection against harmful UVA/UVB rays. UVA rays are ultra violet rays that affect how we our skin ages from the sun and can cause skin cancer if you are exposed to a high amount of these rays. UVB rays are ultra violet rays that cause our skin to sunburn and for causing skin cancer. Since both types of rays are dangerous, especially with our ozone layer depleting (what protects our earth from the sun emitting too many UVA/UVB rays), it is important to use sunscreen that includes both UVA and UVB protection. If you’re planning on being in the water, use water-proof sunscreen and if you’re not going to be splashing around, water-resistant is the way to go!

We hear many complain about not wanting to use sunscreen because they’re afraid of breaking out and not getting tan. Well, for one, you won’t break out if you use an oil-free sunscreen so you can’t use that as an excuse anymore! And you will still get a nice tan, though it may take a little longer, but trust us at Acne Skin Site, it will be worth it in the long run! You will have less sun damage which means you’ll look young longer and you’ll significantly reduce your chances of getting skin cancer! Bi-winning!

Tanning beds are “so yesterday” as well. There are so many great self-tanning products out there now that treat your skin so much better and will leave you streak-free and beautifully bronzed. Our favorite is Tan Towel!  The site is www.tantowel.com  So do your skin and yourself a favor and take care of your skin!
